Day 6

Subject: Practising mindfulness can boost your EI, [firstname].

One way to really boost your EI and EQ is to meditate. A lot of people people find this concept scary. They think you've got to be a Buddhist or sit in an awkward position on the floor to meditate properly.

Not so. The type of meditation I want to tell you about today is called “mindfulness”. You don't have to sit cross-legged on the floor to do it. In fact you can do it just about anywhere – even when you're walking down the street. You can practice mindfulness regardless of whatever religion (or none) that you follow.

Essentially, the goal in Mindfulness is to be “aware” and to be “present” of your own thoughts and to reflect on them. This form of meditation doesn't encourage you to try and empty your mind, but rather the objective is simply to let your thoughts 'drift by' like clouds in the sky.

What this allows you to do, is to become more aware of what thoughts you actually tend to have, thereby being better able to spot negative thought patterns etc. that might be causing problems. This type of meditation has also been shown to reduce anxiety, almost as effectively as anxiety-reducing drugs enabling you to better deal with the stresses that come with everyday life. Perhaps the biggest advantage of mindfulness though, is that it's not as challenging as some other types of meditation and so provides a great starting point for those interested in learning more about the subject.

In some ways, this ties into the “trait” model of EI – making you more aware of aspects of your personality that, perhaps, you would like to change, and giving you the insight to do so.

Warmly,

[Your Name]
